What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment needs multiple appointments for us to effectively treat the infection and restore the tooth. The more complex the root canals of the tooth, the longer we will need to treat it.

We first start by diagnosing the issue. X-rays help us identify the infection and severity of any internal damage, and we then plan your treatments and book your appointments.

The first step involves entering the tooth and removing the pulp – the soft tissues within the tooth. We always use local anaesthetic to reduce your discomfort, and many patients remark on how pain-free the treatment is overall.

We then clean the canals with disinfecting solution, flushing out debris and any remaining bacteria. Your tooth is then sealed with a temporary filling.

Next, we shape the tooth canals using very precise instruments before filling and sealing them. We then rebuild your tooth, removing any damage. If the infection has caused any discolouration, we can use internal bleaching to return the tooth to its original colour.

Looking after your treated tooth

A successfully treated tooth will function just as your other teeth, and will need regular care and maintenance to protect it from gum disease and dental decay.

Regular brushing and interdental cleaning, in addition to regular visits to your dentist, will keep your tooth in great shape for life.
